PunBB

April 26, 2004 | In Developer, General

I am just trialling a new BBS piece of software: PunBB. After using PHPBB to power another experimental site for a while, I stumbled upon this.
I’m quite sold on the ideology behind it:

The idea of PunBB was first born when I wanted to install a discussion board to a website I was tinkering with. I looked around quite a lot, but all the boards I found were either “over-featured” or too graphic for the purpose they would be filling. I wanted a package that

  • was fast.
  • had a simple layout and design.
  • was easy to administrate and moderate.
  • didn’t output huge, non-valid, HTML pages.
  • had source code you could read and understand.

So far, it seems to live up to expectations. I’m just tweaking the CSS file to bring the styles in-line with the other areas of my website.
My new BBS software.
Well, after having a play around with it, I’ve found a few flaws. It relies on a *lot* of hard-coded HTML TABLEs. Doing a search for TABLE tags reveals around 136 instances.

  1. Well, I spoke too soon. The sheer volume of TABLEs is enough to make anyone cry.
There are stacks of hard-coded widths and cellpadding/spacing. Bit of a shame.
